The House of Can Yücel

The House of Can Yücel

''Let my place be Datça; when I am dead bury me in Datça.'' Can Yücel spent the last ten years of his life in Datça. The house where Can Yücel, one of the greatest Turkish poets, lived and wrote many of his best poems has become an integral part of Old Datça. The ground floor of the house, which has been turned into a museum, but which is kept closed, is a display case for the paintings, poems and writings of the poet. And the house where his house is located has been named after him.

Can Yücel has contributed greatly to the growing popularity of Old Datça. "Orhan's Café," whichis situated at the entrance to Old Datça, was always Can Yücel's favorite get-away place. The wine left unfinished by Can Yücel at his death is still preserved in a corner of the café while his favorite spot in the café is now permanently reserved for the poet as a way to honor his memory.
